Compare Surfshark, NordVPN and Proton VPN by the amount due today, term length, monthly equivalent, renewal cost and refund terms.

Surfshark Starter is our paid-value pick among the three long-term offers checked for this guide. Its official US offer was $67.23 upfront for 27 months, equal to $2.49 per month. That is not a $2.49 monthly charge, and the plan renews at $79 for one year under the provider's current terms.

This page contains Surfshark affiliate links. If you buy through them, VPNVertex may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. NordVPN and Proton VPN are included as factual price benchmarks and do not receive commercial links on this page.

Prices and terms were checked on official US-dollar pages on October 1, 2026. This is a source-based price comparison, not a VPNVertex hands-on performance or security test.

Quick answer

NeedBest starting pointWhy
Lowest long-term paid offer checkedSurfshark Starter$67.23 upfront for 27 months; $2.49 monthly equivalent before tax
No-cost optionProton VPN Free$0, with one device and provider-controlled server selection
One month without a long contractCompare live monthly checkoutsSurfshark's $16.45 monthly plan was not the lowest verified monthly price in this check
Lowest renewal among the paid offers checkedSurfshark Starter$79 for 12 months, narrowly below Proton VPN Plus at $83.88 for 12 months

The answer changes with the time horizon. Proton VPN Free costs nothing, Surfshark had the lowest verified long-term paid entry cost, and NordVPN's verified one-month Basic price was lower than Surfshark's one-month Starter price. A useful list of the best cheap VPNs must keep those questions separate.

Cheap VPN price comparison

The table normalizes the figures visible on official pricing and renewal pages. Taxes are excluded because they depend on location. Extra months are counted in the monthly equivalent because they are part of the advertised introductory term.

How we compare a cheap VPN price

The advertised monthly figure is usually an average across a prepaid term. It answers, "What does the first term average per month?" It does not answer, "What will my card be charged today?" For Surfshark Starter, $2.49 multiplied by 27 months equals the $67.23 first payment.

The renewal figure is a separate calculation. Surfshark states that its two-year plans renew for one year at $79. Dividing $79 by 12 produces a $6.58 monthly equivalent. NordVPN's listed $139.08 annual renewal equals $11.59 per month, while Proton VPN Plus lists $83.88 for 12 months, or $6.99 per month.

Term length matters too. Surfshark and NordVPN included three extra months in the offers checked, so their first terms covered 27 months. Proton's checked offer covered 24 months. Comparing only the headline rate, without the number of months or the actual charge, can make two unlike offers look equivalent.

Why Surfshark is our paid value pick

Surfshark wins this narrow price comparison because its verified long-term Starter offer combined the lowest displayed paid rate, the lowest first payment and the lowest annual renewal of the three paid offers checked. The provider also states that paid subscriptions allow unlimited simultaneous device connections, which can reduce the effective cost for a household with many devices.

That conclusion is conditional. It does not mean Surfshark is the fastest, safest or best VPN for every person. We did not run speed, leak, streaming or app tests for this article. It means the current price structure is the strongest paid-value starting point when the buyer accepts a 27-month introductory term and can pay $67.23 upfront.

If you are comparing Surfshark directly with the higher-priced NordVPN offer, our NordVPN versus Surfshark comparison covers the wider product trade-offs. Price alone should not replace checks for the apps, locations and controls you need.

The cheapest long-term VPN is not always the cheapest monthly VPN

A month-to-month plan avoids a large upfront payment and a long introductory term, but the rate is usually much higher. Surfshark Starter was $16.45 for one month. NordVPN Basic was $14.99 for one month on the official page checked. We did not capture a stable Proton VPN Plus monthly amount from the same US checkout, so the table tells you to verify it rather than filling the gap with an older figure.

For a two-month need, paying monthly may still cost less in total than buying 24 or 27 months you will not use. For a year or more, the introductory long-term offers can produce a lower total cost per month. The correct comparison is the total amount you expect to keep the service, not the smallest number printed on a pricing card.

Proton VPN Free is a different choice. The provider states that it has no data limit or artificial speed limit, but it allows one device and assigns free users to servers in ten countries rather than offering the same selection as VPN Plus. It is the cheapest option in dollars, not a feature-for-feature substitute for the paid plans.

Refunds and automatic renewal

All three providers state a 30-day refund period for an eligible initial purchase. That does not make every payment refundable. Surfshark's current terms say the money-back guarantee applies to the initial purchase and that recurring payments are nonrefundable. NordVPN's refund policy also distinguishes the initial purchase from renewal payments. Proton's terms describe a 30-day initial refund window and exclusions for some payment methods.

Each paid plan renews automatically unless canceled. Surfshark states that it sends a reminder 30 days before the end of longer plans, except one-month subscriptions, and that the standard nonintroductory rate applies at renewal. Proton says subscriptions renew at the current price, which may differ from the price visible when you first subscribed. Treat the renewal amount in this article as a dated check, not a lifetime promise.

Before paying: save the checkout screen, record the exact first charge and term, note the renewal date and amount, and read the refund rules for your payment channel.

Who should choose what?

Choose Surfshark Starter if

  1. You want the lowest verified long-term paid entry cost in this comparison.
  2. You can pay $67.23 upfront and expect to use the service for most of the 27-month term.
  3. Unlimited simultaneous connections are useful for your household.

Consider NordVPN Basic if

  1. You prefer NordVPN after comparing features and evidence, and the higher first charge fits your budget.
  2. You only need one month and its verified $14.99 Basic price remains below Surfshark's at checkout.

Consider Proton VPN if

  1. You need a legitimate $0 option and accept the free tier's device and server-selection limits.
  2. You prefer Proton VPN Plus and its verified $71.76 first charge, even though Surfshark was slightly lower.

Methodology and limits

We checked official pricing, renewal, support and refund pages in US dollars on October 1, 2026. We recorded the plan name, number of included months, monthly equivalent, amount due before tax, stated renewal and refund window. The monthly equivalents shown in parentheses are simple arithmetic from the provider-published totals.

We did not buy a subscription, create provider accounts, click an affiliate checkout, run speed tests, inspect DNS or IPv6 leaks, test a kill switch, test streaming access or submit a refund. Provider statements are labeled and dated. The commercial verdict is limited to the published price structure, not untested product performance.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best cheap VPN in 2026?

For a paid long-term plan, Surfshark Starter is our price-value pick among the three offers checked on October 1, 2026. Proton VPN Free is the lowest-cost option at $0, but it has different limits and is not equivalent to a paid plan.

Why does a VPN advertise $2.49 per month but charge $67.23?

The $2.49 figure is the average monthly equivalent of a 27-month introductory term. The provider charges the full $67.23 upfront before tax rather than billing $2.49 every month.

Are the cheapest VPNs safe?

Price alone cannot answer that. Review the current privacy policy, independent audit scope, app permissions, update record and refund terms. This article compares price structure and does not claim hands-on security results.

Will the introductory price renew at the same rate?

No assumption should be made. The plans checked list separate renewal amounts. Surfshark's two-year Starter offer renews for one year at $79 under the current published schedule, while providers reserve the right to change future pricing.

Final verdict

Surfshark Starter is the clearest paid-value candidate in this dated comparison: $67.23 upfront for 27 months, a $2.49 monthly equivalent, and a current $79 annual renewal. Choose it only if the full first payment and long term fit your real use. For the product-level evidence behind that recommendation, read the full Surfshark review before buying.
