Privacy and security
NordVPN is headquartered in Panama, a jurisdiction with no mandatory data retention laws and no membership in the 5/9/14 Eyes intelligence-sharing alliances. The no-logs policy is backed by the six independent audits detailed above.
The encryption is AES-256-GCM, or ChaCha20 on NordLynx for ARM-based devices. NordVPN's apps have also been examined by independent security researchers at Cure53 for application-level vulnerabilities.
The one significant historical incident is the 2018 breach of a third-party server provider. In response, NordVPN moved to a colocated server model where it owns the hardware, reducing the third-party risk vector. No comparable incident has been documented in the years since.
