Quick verdict
Aggregate score based on Trustpilot, PCMag, Tom's Guide, and Cybernews independent reviews.

Our research methodology
This review synthesizes publicly verifiable data rather than independent hands-on testing. We read every published independent audit, track benchmark coverage from established reviewers (Tom's Guide, PCMag, Cybernews), and aggregate user sentiment from Trustpilot, Reddit, and the App Store. Pricing is checked against the official provider site. If a claim cannot be traced to a verifiable source, it does not appear here. For the full protocol, see our research methodology.

Rating breakdown (out of 10)
Overall: 8.9/10. An aggregate of independent audit findings, public benchmark coverage, and user sentiment. The strongest verifiable security record of any consumer VPN in 2026.
Independent security audits
NordVPN's no-logs policy has been independently audited six times, the most of any consumer VPN. The audits were carried out by PwC and Deloitte, two of the Big Four accounting firms, not by NordVPN itself or by review sites.
| Audit | Firm | Year | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | PwC | 2018 | No-logs policy, Panama-based servers |
| 2nd | PwC | 2020 | No-logs policy, expanded scope |
| 3rd | Deloitte | 2022 | No-logs policy verification |
| 4th | Deloitte | 2023 | No-logs policy verification |
| 5th | Deloitte | 2024 | No-logs policy verification |
| 6th | Deloitte | 2025 | No-logs policy verification, sixth consecutive audit |
The sixth audit (Deloitte, 2025, published February 2026) was reported by Cybernews in May 2026 as the latest in NordVPN's audit cycle. NordVPN publishes its audit history on its official blog. No independent audit has contradicted the no-logs claim, and no data leak has been documented across the audit period.
Performance: what independent reviewers report
We do not run our own speed tests. Instead, we track how established review labs rate NordVPN's performance.
Tom's Guide and PCMag consistently rank NordVPN among the fastest consumer VPNs in their 2025 and 2026 benchmark coverage, crediting the NordLynx protocol (a WireGuard-based implementation) for the strongest results. Cybernews speed benchmarks place NordLynx in the top tier of providers they cover. The consistent pattern across these independent sources is that NordLynx significantly outperforms older protocols such as OpenVPN, and that NordVPN holds a high share of base connection speed on geographically close servers.
If your speeds are lower than expected, protocol choice is usually the cause. Our VPN speed troubleshooting guide explains why, and confirms NordLynx as the recommended setting.
Streaming: based on public data
Streaming reliability changes constantly as services update their VPN blocklists. Rather than claim a fixed success rate, we track what current public sources report.
VPNMentor and CNET both report NordVPN as a consistent performer for unblocking Netflix, Hulu, and BBC iPlayer in their 2026 coverage. User feedback on Reddit r/VPN broadly aligns with this: NordVPN's streaming-optimized servers are among the most frequently recommended for US streaming services accessed from abroad. As with every VPN, individual servers are occasionally blocked and reconnecting to a different server in the same region is the standard fix.
For the streaming use case specifically, see our guide on how to watch Hulu from outside the US.
User sentiment: Trustpilot, Reddit, AppStore
Aggregated user reports are a useful counterweight to both marketing claims and reviewer opinion.
Pricing (verified May 2026)
The figures below were checked against the official NordVPN pricing page in May 2026. Promotional pricing changes often, so verify the current rate before subscribing.
| Plan | Billing | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Basic (VPN) | Monthly | $12.99/month |
| Basic (VPN) | 2-year plan | from $3.09/month |
Privacy and security
NordVPN is headquartered in Panama, a jurisdiction with no mandatory data retention laws and no membership in the 5/9/14 Eyes intelligence-sharing alliances. The no-logs policy is backed by the six independent audits detailed above.
The encryption is AES-256-GCM, or ChaCha20 on NordLynx for ARM-based devices. NordVPN's apps have also been examined by independent security researchers at Cure53 for application-level vulnerabilities.
The one significant historical incident is the 2018 breach of a third-party server provider. In response, NordVPN moved to a colocated server model where it owns the hardware, reducing the third-party risk vector. No comparable incident has been documented in the years since.
Who NordVPN is for
Based on the evidence above, NordVPN is the pragmatic pick if you fit any of these profiles:
You want US streaming services to work when you are abroad. NordVPN's streaming-optimized servers are widely reported as reliable for this.
You need dependable encryption on hotel and cafe Wi-Fi. NordLynx is rated top-tier for speed by independent reviewers, so the protection comes with minimal slowdown on close servers.
You want one subscription covering up to 6 devices. The six-audit no-logs record is the strongest verifiable privacy posture among consumer VPNs.
You watch BBC iPlayer and US Netflix. VPNMentor and CNET coverage, plus Reddit r/VPN feedback, consistently rank NordVPN well for streaming.
The apps are highly rated on the AppStore and Google Play. Setup is straightforward, with little to configure.
Who NordVPN is NOT for
This is the section most VPN reviews skip. Here is where NordVPN is the wrong choice:
The official Linux app is CLI-only, no GUI. There are community wrappers but no first-party support. ExpressVPN has a real Linux GUI; pick it instead.
NordVPN's dedicated IP costs extra on top of the subscription. Surfshark bundles a dedicated IP at a lower add-on cost.
NordVPN's consumer plan caps at 6 simultaneous devices. For 5+ users with admin controls, switch to NordLayer (their business product). See our small business VPN comparison.
NordVPN works in China only some of the time. ExpressVPN and Astrill are more consistently reported to work behind the Great Firewall. Pick one of those if China is your main use case.
NordVPN has no free tier. Proton VPN does (limited but legitimate).

FAQ
Final verdict
On the evidence, NordVPN is the right answer for most US consumers in 2026. Six independent no-logs audits, top-tier speed coverage from established reviewers, broadly positive user sentiment across 48,000+ Trustpilot reviews, and a 30-day money-back guarantee make it the most verifiable general-purpose VPN available.
The honest critique: the renewal price rises after the first term, and Threat Protection is not a full substitute for a browser-level ad blocker. Neither changes the recommendation; they temper it.
If you are weighing NordVPN against its closest rival, our NordVPN vs ExpressVPN comparison breaks down the audit, speed, and price differences side by side.
