NordVPN vs ExpressVPN 2026: Which VPN should you buy?

NordVPN vs ExpressVPN is no longer a simple price comparison. ExpressVPN changed its plans, device limits, and dedicated-IP offer in 2026, while NordVPN expanded its network and completed a sixth no-logs assurance engagement. We compared current official documentation, audit records, plan structure, and everyday usability. NordVPN remains our overall pick, but ExpressVPN now closes several feature gaps.
Quick verdict
NordVPN is the better all-around choice for most people. Its repeated no-logs assurance record, broad specialty-server selection, Meshnet, and simpler value proposition give it the edge.
ExpressVPN is the better fit when app simplicity, router use, or its zero-knowledge dedicated-IP design matters most. Its 2026 plan structure now supports 10, 12, or 14 simultaneous connections depending on tier, so ExpressVPN now matches or exceeds NordVPN on connection count depending on tier.
Our research methodology
This comparison synthesizes publicly verifiable data: vendor security audits, peer-reviewed app source code (where available), benchmark reports from established reviewers, official pricing pages, and aggregated user feedback from Trustpilot and Reddit. We do not run our own speed tests. Read our full research methodology for the criteria and weighting we apply.

Round 1. Security and independent evidence
NordVPN completed its sixth independent no-logs assurance engagement at the end of 2025. Deloitte examined the systems between November 10 and December 12, 2025 and concluded that they were designed and implemented in line with NordVPN’s no-logs statement. The full report is available inside a Nord Account.
ExpressVPN’s Trust Center lists 23 third-party audit reports through June 2025, but they do not all assess the same claim. The most relevant privacy evidence is KPMG’s work on TrustedServer and the privacy policy in 2019, 2022, 2023, and 2025. Separate Cure53 and Praetorian reviews cover products such as Lightway, apps, extensions, and routers.
Both use RAM-only server designs and publish detailed security documentation. Audit count alone cannot produce a winner because a no-logs assurance report and an app penetration test answer different questions.

Verdict: NordVPN wins for repeated no-logs cadence. ExpressVPN provides the broader public library of product-security assessments.
Round 2. Performance without fake precision
We do not run our own speed tests. Public benchmark results also change with location, protocol, server load, device, and the tester’s base connection. A percentage from one lab should not be presented as the speed every reader will receive.
NordLynx and Lightway are both designed as modern, lightweight protocols. NordLynx is based on WireGuard, while Lightway is ExpressVPN’s open-source protocol. For most home connections, server distance and congestion will matter more than small differences between headline benchmark results.
Choose a nearby server, leave protocol selection on automatic first, and test the services you actually use during the refund period. Our VPN speed troubleshooting guide covers common causes of slow connections.
Verdict: no universal winner. NordVPN often performs strongly in public WireGuard-based tests, while ExpressVPN prioritizes consistent Lightway behavior across its apps.
Round 3. Streaming and supported devices
Neither provider can guarantee a particular streaming catalog or permanent access. Streaming platforms control territory, account, and device rules, and their VPN detection changes without notice.
Both providers offer apps for major desktop, mobile, and TV platforms. NordVPN includes SmartPlay in its apps. ExpressVPN offers MediaStreamer for devices that cannot run a VPN app, but MediaStreamer is DNS functionality and does not provide VPN encryption.
Use a VPN for connection privacy while traveling only when that use fits the streaming service’s terms. If a service reports a location error, check account region, device location permissions, billing country, and the provider’s current support documentation.
Verdict: tie for broad device support. ExpressVPN has the more polished router ecosystem; NordVPN offers more specialty-server choices.
Round 4. Privacy, jurisdiction, and ownership
NordVPN operates from Panama, while ExpressVPN operates from the British Virgin Islands. Neither location automatically proves stronger privacy. Infrastructure design, data retained, audit scope, and the provider’s response to legal requests are more useful than alliance labels alone.
ExpressVPN has belonged to Kape Technologies since 2021. Its current Trust Center publishes audit reports and transparency statistics, including government and civil requests that produced no user-related data disclosure. NordVPN publishes repeated assurance work and operates its no-logs controls under a Panama-based service.
Verdict: tie. ExpressVPN provides extensive public transparency material; NordVPN has the longer repeated no-logs assurance cadence.
Round 5. Plans, introductory offers, and renewal
Static price tables become inaccurate quickly because provider promotions, taxes, extra months, currencies, and renewal schedules vary. Compare the full charge shown today, the services included, the first renewal date, and the amount disclosed for that renewal.
NordVPN sells several bundles that may add password management, storage, identity-protection tools, or other services depending on market. ExpressVPN now sells Basic, Advanced, and Express Pro. Its two-year option is an introductory offer that renews annually after the first two-year period.
ExpressVPN Basic includes 10 connections, Advanced 12, and Pro 14. A dedicated IP is available as an add-on to Basic and Advanced and is included with Pro. This makes old comparisons based on eight devices and no dedicated IP unusable.
Verdict: NordVPN usually presents the simpler value case for VPN-focused buyers. ExpressVPN’s higher tiers may suit readers who actually need the bundled services.
Round 6. Support and user reports
Trustpilot, app-store, and Reddit scores are snapshots, not product specifications. Review totals change daily, platforms attract different audiences, and extreme billing experiences are more likely to be posted than routine use.
Use recent reviews to identify recurring themes such as renewal confusion, connection problems, or support delays. Then verify the relevant rule in the provider’s current support documentation. Do not rank two security products from a single star average.
Verdict: no reliable numerical winner. Both provide live-chat support and documented account-management procedures.

Daily use: the differences you will actually notice
NordVPN places more specialist choices in front of the user. Double VPN routes traffic through two VPN servers, Onion Over VPN connects to the Tor network after the VPN, and Meshnet creates encrypted links between approved devices. These tools are useful when the need is clear, but most people will spend nearly all their time pressing Quick Connect.
ExpressVPN keeps the main app deliberately restrained. Location selection, protocol choice, Network Lock, and protection settings are easier to find without studying a large feature menu. The trade-off is that some extras now depend on the subscription tier. Before paying for Advanced or Pro, identify which included service you will genuinely use.
The router difference is more practical. NordVPN provides instructions for compatible third-party routers, while ExpressVPN maintains its own router app and sells Aircove hardware. A router connection can protect devices that lack native VPN apps, but it also counts every device behind the router as using the same location. That can be inconvenient for banking, local services, or household members who need different regions.
Dedicated IP deserves similar caution. Both providers offer it in selected locations. A stable address can reduce CAPTCHAs and make an allowlisted work connection easier, but it sacrifices some of the crowd effect of a shared VPN address. It is not automatically more private.
Neither service eliminates the need for account security. Use multi-factor authentication, keep recovery codes offline, install apps only from official stores, and review renewal settings after purchase. If privacy and publicly readable reports are the priority, our NordVPN vs Proton VPN comparison covers the open-source alternative.
Alternatives: Surfshark and Proton VPN
Surfshark supports unlimited simultaneous VPN connections under its fair-use policy. Deloitte issued no-logs assurance reports in 2023 and 2025, while separate assessments cover its apps and infrastructure.
Proton VPN publishes annual Securitum no-logs reports and makes its apps open source. It is the better alternative when publicly readable audit evidence matters more than bundled consumer features.
NordVPN vs ExpressVPN FAQ
Final verdict
NordVPN wins this comparison for most users. Six no-logs assurance engagements, strong specialty features, and a clear ten-connection allowance make it the more balanced VPN purchase.
ExpressVPN now offers more connections and a dedicated-IP option. Its current Basic, Advanced, and Pro tiers support 10 to 14 connections, and its dedicated-IP design is a real differentiator. Choose it when router experience, app simplicity, or that stable-IP architecture matters more than NordVPN’s broader feature set. The evidence behind each verdict sits in our NordVPN review and our ExpressVPN review.
